School of Architecture Student Team: Kevin Alloway, Avery Gilloren, Theo Kypreos, Michaela Maloney, Didi Onwubueke, Gabriela Palacios, Quinn Plante, Jenna Schor, Akshit Sethi, Ravyn Smith The Housing Cards illustrate a range of models for addressing the housing affordability crisis. Chosen for their level of speculation and innovation in the domestic realm, these projects are sourced from all continents to provide a glimpse into the image of housing in different geographic regions and cultures. Ranging from low-cost interventions to large multi-unit complexes, the collection provides an analytical view of housing across scales, typologies, and ownership structures to facilitate comparisons among them. Each project is depicted in terms of its image and its building block: its façade is drawn in perspectival projection, alluding to our perception of place; while its unit floor plans, in orthographic projection, showcase lived conditions via spatial organization and the interrelationship between units. The projects have been carefully redrawn, measured, and catalogued; yielding six index values that serve as the basis for comparison among the projects. The values are shown diagrammatically as bar graphs and polygonal plots to allow for easy sorting the cards in any way the user sees fit. Architecture students can use the cards to facilitate the selection of precedents that align with their vision for housing interventions. The public, on the other hand, can use the cards as a didactic tool for learning about different approaches to housing across geographic regions, cultures, scales, and forms of inhabitation. problematic typology, this project seeks to uncover and exploit spatial opportunities afforded by the triangular structure to resolve its inherent problems of scale, circulation, and daylight. By refiguring and reconstituting this misunderstood typology, it presents it not only as a functional work-live space, but also as a provocative domestic experience. Historically, the A-frame is an ancient typology that is part of the western vernacular. In the United States, the A-frame became popular in the mid 1900s, where it was marketed as the ideal second home from leisure. From Schindler’s Arts &amp; Craft A-frame in 1934, to prefabricated A-frame homes of the 1950s &amp; 1960s, to the post-modern semiotic A-frame designed by Venturi, Scott Brown &amp; Izenour in 1998, the typical A-frame did not evolve and was shunned by architects and clients alike. Steve Izenour himself called the A-frame “the most under-appreciated architectural form.” Starting from an existing house, built in 1966 and located in Becket, Massachusetts, this project seeks to resolve the three main problems typical of the A-frame typology. The first is their scale: the equilateral triangle cross section prevents the house from extending laterally, as doing so would not only increase the height of the house, but also the length of its spans. To resolve this, the footprint of the existing A-frame is doubled and shifted laterally so that the structure overlaps between the ridges. The exterior chords of the structure are extended vertically, creating a third level above. Finally, the new extension shears vertically do accommodate the sloping site. Second, the circulation was resolved. Due to the limit area and tapering head space, A-frames are usually furnished with ladders. The new A-frame takes advantage of the overlapped structure by repurposing the formerly exterior face of the roof into a diagonal stair where the full triple height elevation can be experienced. This atrium also solves the third problem: the lack of daylight. The diagonal skylights at the ridge complemented by the full-height glazing at the gable ends fills the interior spaces with light while also framing views of the forested landscape. Following Claude Parent and Paul Virilio’s Function of the Oblique, the house proposes to reframe the inherent incline of the house as a programmatic space, allowing the users to inhabit the roof. This is the culmination of a process that began a few years back, with the commissioning of a Historical American Building Survey (or HABS, in short) - which is a record of building compiled by following strict guidelines for documenting historical data, drawings, and black and white photography. The volumetric subtractions create interior streets that split the buildings into quadrants or halves, devising a strategy for organizing the program, opening courtyards for daylight, adding terraces for vegetation, and replacing the roof structure with a green roof. Instead of treating them as back-of-house programs, the training spaces and shops for automotive, construction, culinary arts, and other trades occupy the entirety of the rectangular building. The offsets in the cuts ensure that these spaces are made visible to the public from multiple vantage points. On the circular building, housing for students is provided as co-living units that flank light-filled communal areas. In order to advocate for the preservation of these buildings, the work that we do as architects must go beyond the disciplinary confines that restrict our images.&nbsp;To become accessible to a wider audience, they need to infiltrate the existing structures of power that assign value to the material objects and buildings. The idea is to insert the building proposal (rather forcefully) into different forms of media through which architecture circulate. Visualizations and renderings that already permeate our design production make use of exaggerated perspectives that distort the real experience of the spaces they depict.&nbsp;Yet, in this case, they are turned into magazine covers or ads for building products, in an attempt to leverage marketing to promote the architecture. The images are, however, still not accessible and their reach does not extend far enough. To change the public perception about the building by promoting the institution that it houses, and vice versa. <img width="1655" height="1656" width_o="1655" height_o="1656" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/e35b2a41624da44484e8afc60c1c71fa52b463bb89b2be575eab49ab53828cd3/03A-1_smartphone_anim.gif" data-mid="143337285" border="0" data-scale="64" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/e35b2a41624da44484e8afc60c1c71fa52b463bb89b2be575eab49ab53828cd3/03A-1_smartphone_anim.gif" /> The reach of a social media post is, however, limited compared to recognizable pop culture references.&nbsp;Again, operating within the realm of the plausible, the buildings are carefully, or perhaps forcefully, inserted into | and transformed to fit within | well-known movies such as Blade Runner 2049 (2017), where they become a destination in the future; or a basswood model for the Center of Ants scene in Zoolander (2001); or as a backdrop for the animated film, Wall-E (2008), whose critique against our view of obsolescence and waste seems perfectly fitting for an argument in favor of preservation. The purpose is to inhabit and appropriate fleeting scenes, aiming to challenge the observer's recollection of the movie. This final set of translations are toys and/or souvenirs that also help circulate the image of a building. Their existence implies the value of the buildings must be significant enough for these objects to be created. Their audience is varied, niche or not. But all of them seek to expand the reach of the digital campaign.&nbsp; Each object takes into the account the resolution that can be achieved by the material they are made out of, creating realistic portrayals of objects that form part of an existing structure of value spearheaded by economic and social demands. The Lego set can be seen as both a toy and a token, a recognizable system that can help build an icon. <img width="1800" height="1200" width_o="1800" height_o="1200"
